It’s Sew Easy: Adding a Snap to a Wrap Top Sewing Tutorial

How to Add a Snap to a Top by Bunny Baubles Blog

Things I love: rompers. Things I don’t love: holding the neckline of my romper closed any time I bend over, move, or a passing breeze comes by. Let’s be honest with ourselves, if something is difficult or uncomfortable to wear, we will not wear it.

Outfit Details: Romper – Saks Fifth Avenue RED || Wedges (similar, similar) – Zappos || Earrings (similar) – Forever 21

Some clothing items are too cute to pass up, but every time you put them on you are frustrated with trying to keep everything in place. To make these troublesome wrap dresses and cross-over neckline tops wearable again, all you need to do is add on a hidden snap to the neckline! These snaps are hidden away so they will not change the appearance of your clothing at all, and they are incredibly cheap ($3 for 8 snaps). I’ve added these small snaps to two of my rompers and an shirt that probably should have included another button, and now I can play without worrying about any slip ups!

This can be done very quickly by hand with just a needle and thread, so this project is perfect for anyone, including beginners! Let’s snap to it! I’m sorry, you know I can’t resist a pun.

Oh, and this romper? I picked it up at Saks OFF 5TH in Houston last weekend and absolutely love it. The fabric drapes beautifully and is something I would never sew myself since I hate working with chiffon and silks. Since I’m such a painfully bargain-based shopper I almost didn’t go for it, but then I slipped my hands into the pockets – that’s right, pockets – and knew I had to have it. Supplies:

Snap set
Needle
Thread to match clothing item
Pencil

How to Add a Snap to a Top Instructions by Bunny Baubles Blog

1. Try on your item of clothing with an open neckline. Hold together the fabric where you want it to lie on your neck. Mark with a pencil on the front of the bottom layer of fabric and the back of the top layer where they intersect so that you know where to sew the closures. I actually used a white eyeliner pencil on this garment since it was black… anything washable works!

2. Remove the item of clothing. Grab your snap set and sew one side of each snap to the marks you made with the pencil in the last step. When sewing on the bottom layer snap, you should thread from the backside of the fabric, so the starting and ending points will be tied off out of sight. When sewing on the top layer snap, you should sew through the back side of the fabric as well, so the knots will be on the back side of the fabric, or the same side as the snap.

Sew around the holes in the snap a couple of times with small stitches. If your item of clothing has multiple layers of fabric like a lining and a print, just sew through the lining of the fabric so that the thread does not show at all on the front side of the clothing. My romper had a folded edge that I was able to sew through so the front of the fabric did not have any seams (see below).

3. Put on the clothing item as normal and snap the closure. You should now be able to keep your neckline closed without any unsightly buttons or threads!

  1. Thank you for this post! 🙂 I have a new wrap dress but am hesitant to wear it to work. I was thinking I needed to wear a tank under it – ugh. Never thought of snaps until I saw someone post a review about adding snaps to another dress I just saw online. Your instructions are very helpful! I can do this! Lol!
