Is there anything more perfect than the smell of cinnamon sugar wafting from the oven while you sip on hot cocoa under the light of the Christmas tree? Being home for the holidays is something I absolutely cherish, and this year I got to go home at Thanksgiving for the first time in years! We took full advantage of our time together by doing what we do best: baking.

These holiday cinnamon rolls just exude happiness and comfort. Not only do they taste like heaven, they create the most wonderful smell in your entire house. Nothing makes more sense than a pan of these on Christmas morning, don’t you think?

I went where everyone should probably go when it comes to buttery, sugary comfort food – Ms. Paula Deen. I adapted my recipe from hers, and we gobbled these up before I could take some decent photos with the frosting on the tops. I think you’ll forgive me when you taste them. Sweet, spiced, gooey, and buttery; it doesn’t get better than these homemade cinnamon rolls!

Homemade Holiday Cinnamon Rolls

  • Servings: 16 rolls
  • Difficulty: medium
  • Print

Ingredients:

Rolls:
1/4 oz. Package of Yeast
1/2 cup Warm Water
1/2 cup Hot Milk
1/4 cup Sugar
1/3 cup Butter, melted
1 Large Egg
1 tsp. Salt
3.5 cups Flour (I used half all purpose and half wheat)

Filling:
1/3 cup Butter, melted
2/3 cup Sugar
2 Tbs. Cinnamon

Glaze:
1/2 cup Butter, melted
2 cups Powdered Sugar
1 tsp. Vanilla
4 Tbs. Hot Water

1. Mix the yeast into the warm water to dissolve. Set aside. In a large bowl mix together the hot milk, butter, sugar, egg, and salt until combined. Slowly begin to add in half of the flour and mix. Then add in your yeast mixture, followed by the remaining flour. Keep mixing until the flour has a hard time sticking to the dough. Take the dough out of the bowl and knead it on a floured counter, continuing to add flour until it will not stick any more (no more than a total of 4 cups of flour). Place the dough into a bowl coated in oil and cover with a wet cloth. Let rise for at least 1 hour.

2. Once the bread has risen for at least an hour, punch it down and remove it from the bowl. Place the dough onto a floured counter and roll out into a 1′ x 2′ rectangle, about 1/2″ thick. Pour the melted butter all over the dough and then sprinkle the sugar and cinnamon on top. Roll the dough along the long side into a long cylinder. Cut cinnamon rolls about 1-2″ thick and place them into a buttered pan. Sprinkle a little more sugar over the tops. Let the rolls sit and expand for about another hour.

3. Preheat the oven to 350 deg. F, and bake the rolls for 30-40 minutes, or until they have begun to brown and are bubbling on top. Mix together the glaze by combining the melted butter, powdered sugar, and vanilla in a bowl. Add hot water a tablespoon at a time until it reaches a thick pouring consistency. Pour the glaze on top and serve.

    1. Yes! I have to say that as long as you get the yeast to fizz in the warm water then you shouldn’t have any issues! Once in a while you get some dead yeast, but it’s so cheap that it’s not a big deal 🙂

  1. Looks great. I’ve got a question about the recipe. Maybe I wasn’t paying attention, but as you need the yeast to rise, when exactly do you add it in? There’s no more mention of the yeast and water after it’s set aside.
